What should a doctor’s prayer be?
We physicians need all the guidance we can get, and wisdom.
We need to do what we can, realize that we have our limits, and have faith that our limits can be exceeded.
We need to remember to ask others to pray for us, and for our patients, and to pray that the diseases we treat, and the people we care for will be fully healed.
We need to remember that the best prayer is often a prayer of thankfulness.
It is such a blessing to be allowed to help others, particularly sick people. We pray to become better at the job.
We know life isn’t perfect, and nobody lives forever, and all that, but we have a hard time celebrating, or feeling lucky about, not being able to help every patient, every time.
Some days are really hard. Some patients are very sick. Sometimes we are so very human. We pray to manage our humanness, and to have the peace we need to be competent, and even exceed our abilities.
We pray to keep it all in perspective even though we believe that’s a very tall order.
Perhaps there is no perfect doctor’s prayer.
But, today we ask for guidance, and want to more readily feel grateful.
We ask, too, for patience, and for tolerance, and for the ability to realize that some things are truly difficult, mysterious, and beyond human understanding.
We ask for a listening ear as we seek help for those beyond our human abilities. We ask for the strength to push hard when we should, and the wisdom to let go when we’ve done all we can.
May we be allowed to be the physicians that our patients need…May the minds of all beings find peace!
